Advice from the Cyprus Police for cyclists

The bicycle is a beneficial means of transportation. However, due to its nature, cyclists are considered as one of the most vulnerable groups of road users.

Due to the fact that it has recently been noted that many cyclists do not take proper safety measures when cycling on the road, especially during hours with low-light conditions (night, morning), the Cyprus Police is offering the following advice.

For their own personal safety, each cyclist should:
* Wear a protective helmet
* Wear light-colored clothes and a reflective vest in order to visible by passing vehicles, especially during the night or early morning hours
* Make sure that your bike has front and rear lights which are turned on, in order to be easily visible to passing drivers
* Comply with the Road Traffic Code
* Keep to the left side of the road
* Comply with the traffic signs and traffic lights
* Use bicycle lanes wherever these are available

Due to the fact that the cyclist is vulnerable and exposed to many dangers, drivers must also take their own measures:

* When following a cyclist or a group of cyclists, approach and overtake them carefully, keeping appropriate distances
* Where necessary, motor vehicles drivers should drive at low speeds and be confident when overtaking cyclists. Please note that it is prohibited to overtake on turns, or when the driver is not sure that he can do so safely
